The calendar says February but three Central Oregon Nordic Club skiers found spring-like conditions when they skied from Dutchman Flat to Todd Lake on Sunday, Feb. 4.
Temperatures were in the low 40s, leaving slushy snow that made it possible to set an edge on the downhill legs, even though no fresh snow has fallen in more than a week. In fact, on the steeper downhills, skiers were able to get off the main track and sink into three or four inches of soft corn snow off to the side.
Adding to the spring-like feel was the lunch stop. Instead of being swarmed by the usual “camp robber” birds at Todd Lake, the group instead stopped by a small waterfall on the creek out of the lake. “Dinner music” was the sound of rushing water normally under snow in February.
