CONC Skiers Head To Big Meadow, Dutchman

Two Central Oregon Nordic Club ski groups headed out during the past week.

On Wednesday, March 7, Jerry Sebestyen led a Meetup group of eight skiers on a backcountry trip to Big Meadow.

“The snow was very icy in the morning but softened throughout the day,” Jerry reports. “By the time we returned to the trailhead, it wasn’t bad at all. I guess it was a typical spring adventure.

“We skied the Big Meadow trail to the usual lunch turnaround and went back. Snow bombs were frequent, and we needed to be aware of them. The weather was clear and views of Broken Top and Bachelor were to be had.”

Then on Sunday, March 11, Linda Frost led another group of eight skiers to Dutchman Flat.

“It was a short but magical ski, involving mostly crust-cruising, shirtsleeves and grins,” Linda reports.

Jerry, who was also on this trip, adds: “We went around Dutchman Flat for a couple of hours and even though the event wasn’t long in distance or time, we all enjoyed the conversation and the camaraderie. The day was blue and perfect early spring weather with snow conditions that were quite skiable. Fifteen minutes into the ski, everyone peeled layers of jackets and sweaters to make it a day when we absorbed the sunshine.”
