A handful of backcountry skiers ventured into the REALLY high country on Sunday, April 22, on what might have been the longest and one of the most spectacular Central Oregon Nordic Club ski trips of the season.
“Five of us opted for the Broken Top ski,” says group leader Susan Sullivan. “We ended up circumnavigating Ball Butte — doing 13.5 miles with around 1,300 feet of elevation gain, in beautiful weather with minimal wind.
“We were concerned that the snow might end up slushy before the end of the day, but actually conditions remained firm and easy gliding (sometimes too easy!) for most of the day.
“You know it’s been a long day when you get back to the Nordic Center parking lot and your cars are nearly the last ones left!”
