President's Corner

Greetings, Fellow Nordic Enthusiasts!

This month's corner celebrates two exciting things: our incredible volunteers and the strategic planning process for CONC's future!

Volunteer Appreciation:

Let's give a resounding THANK YOU to our dedicated volunteers! They are the heart and soul of CONC, turning ideas into amazing experiences for you. From maintaining trails and stocking firewood to leading adventures, their selfless efforts make our club thrive.

As a small token of appreciation, the Board awarded Sno-Park passes to members who volunteered extensively. Interested in joining their ranks? Simply visit the CONC website and update your membership profile to indicate your interests to receive email notifications of new volunteer events. Need help? Check out this handy FAQ!

Shaping CONC's Future:

The Board is actively developing a strategic plan to set the course for CONC's next chapter. We need your input! To ensure our plan reflects the desires of our members, we'll be conducting a survey before Thanksgiving. This will be the first survey since 2022, so your participation is crucial.

Winter Wonderland Awaits!

Get ready for a thrilling winter season! We've got a fantastic line-up of ski and snowshoe outings, clinics, and overnight adventures. Don't miss our social events, after-hours shop gatherings, and member presentations at the Deschutes Public Library. Keep an eye on the events calendar – there's something for everyone!

Stay Connected!

Thank you for being a part of CONC! I, along with the rest of the Board, value your continued support. As always, please reach out with any questions, comments, or suggestions at wppreston@yahoo.com.

See you on the trails!

Warren Preston

President

Trail Maintenance Update

OK Snow, we’re ready for you! The folks doing trail maintenance have surveyed nearly all of the ski and snowshoe trails, and the trails have been logged out, brushed out, and are ready for snow. This week we put up the freshly painted ladder boards with maps at the Sno-Parks, and we also installed the non-slip mats in the outhouses at Swampy Lakes Sno-Park, just ahead of the first fresh snow! Volunteers also cleared brush from around the shelters, stocked them with firewood and they are ready to go. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who helped with firewood, logout and trail work. We wouldn’t be able to have the trails we have without your effort.

Becoming a CONC Activity Leader

by Kelly Cleman

CONC Hike Leader and Board Member

Have you ever thought about becoming an Activity Leader for the Central Oregon Nordic Club? Whether it's for leading a ski, snowshoe, or hiking trip, the club needs dedicated volunteers to lead our outings. And the more leaders we have, the more outdoor activities we can offer to our members. Of course, the thought of leading a group out into nature can be intimidating if you've never done it before. However, we have club resources to help you feel more comfortable doing this. These resources include checklists for getting ready to lead an outing, tips on how to handle common situations that can arise during an activity, and practice leading a trip with the support of an existing activity leader. If this sounds interesting to you, please email me (masterhiker@gmail.com) for more information on how to get started. To highlight some of the benefits of leading trips, here is a testimonial from one of our existing activity leaders on why he leads hikes.

Why I Lead Hikes

Leading hikes is first of all rather fun and also very gratifying! I've been leading hikes for the Nordic club for three years now and enjoy it quite a bit. One of the best parts of leading is making new friends, whether they be long-time members or first timers. I especially enjoy it when a veteran member joins me on a hike and shares stories about the area or a historical/geological fact of the trail. The most rewarding aspect of leading an outing are all the gracious "Thank yous" and big smiles afterwards. CONC is always looking for those with the love of being outdoors and sharing with others. Please consider joining me in becoming an activity leader!

Ski Clinics

Building upon the success of last season’s ski instruction clinics; planning is underway for the 2024-25 ski season.  Laura Seaver has agreed to take over from Jerry Sebestyen overseeing the ski clinics.  Charlie Cornish has taken on the leadership and coordinator role for introductory and beginner level XC ski clinics.  XCD, Telemark and other clinics are planned. Interested in learning?  Interested in teaching?  Have a particular topic for a clinic you would like to see offered?  Drop us a line:  Contact Laura Seaver (lauraseaver@yahoo.com) or Charlie Cornish (charliec@ccornish.com).

Gear Fix

Gear Fix will be accepting winter gear starting in September.  The CONC account number is 12958.  We appreciate anything submitted to our account and use all proceeds for our trail development and maintenance program.  Many thanks to all who have donated over the years!
