President's Corner
President's Corner: Snow is Falling, Fun is Calling!
With the first flakes covering the mountains, it's impossible not to let our thoughts drift toward the sound of skis gliding on fresh powder! The winter season is just around the corner, and we are gearing up for another fantastic lineup of events.
Our monthly social gatherings have been a great success, offering easy, casual opportunities to connect with both longtime members and new faces. As we pivot toward winter, our socials will naturally move to the snow! This includes bringing back our popular after-hours visits to local ski shops and, of course, our December Annual Meeting.
We Need Your Firepower to Keep the Fun Flowing!
To ensure these events are as successful as last year's, we need to rally our amazing volunteers. The most immediate need is on our Social Committee.
Joining this committee is a low-commitment, high-impact way to contribute. Duties include brainstorming ideas for future events and helping on the night of an event (e.g., setting up, welcoming members). If you're willing to help us spread the cheer and make these gatherings run smoothly, please reach out to Nancy Pustis (nanpustis@yahoo.com) or me (see closing below).
Beyond the Socials: Help CONC Serve its Members
CONC's membership continues to grow, which is fantastic—but it also means we need more hands in all areas of the club, from trail maintenance to leading ski, snowshoe, and hike outings to organizing overnight trips to instructing at ski clinics to…well, you get the idea.
If you are interested in volunteering in a way that matches your passion, please take a minute to update your member profile. Check the boxes to be notified about the Volunteer Opportunities that appeal to you. You can also reach out to me at the email address below, and I’ll make sure that your name gets to the appropriate activity leader.
Stay in Touch!
As always, I encourage you to reach out with any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have. You can contact me directly at wppreston@yahoo.com.
Happy Trails!
Warren Preston

Notes About Passwords for Your CONC Account Wild Apricot, the software we use for our underlying tech needs, sets the password requirements, and we don't have control over those requirements. They might seem a bit onerous for "just a club", but we are processing financial transactions, and in this day and age, more internet security is better than less. So, you can expect to have to change your password at least once a year and to have a reasonably complicated password. If you have any issues accessing your CONC account, please email our lead admin Laura Seaver.

Volunteers Needed for Upcoming Ski Clinics
CONC XC ski clinics will return for the 2025-26 season. Full details with dates and registration information will be available in November.
The format of the beginner clinics will be similar to last season: a series of two-hour clinics (XC 101, 102, 103) to introduce XC skiing to newbies as well as to those wanting a refresher with the goal of enabling students to ski on groomed XC ski trails featuring easy hills. We will schedule clinics for Sunday afternoons and Tuesday mornings in December and January, offering each XC 101-2-3 series for several cycles, conditions permitting.
These clinics are powered by volunteers, so we are looking for
-
Returning instructors from previous seasons’ clinics
-
Experienced skiers with or without ski teaching experience
-
Volunteers to assist with ski clinic operations
We will offer a series instructor training opportunities individually tailored to new and experienced instructors alike with focus this season on what to teach and how to teach it for each of XC 101-2-3 lessons.
In addition, we are seeking volunteers to lead coached ski outings, helping introduce new skiers to the joy and fun of skiing on ungroomed trails. These are less formal than the beginner clinics, but with a bit more instruction than a regular ski outing. When the terrain provides challenges, the group will spend some time learning how to deal with that challenge before moving on with the ski tour. If you are interested in helping lead these coached outings but don't have experience instructing, don't worry -- we'll help you get started.
It's super rewarding to help people increase their skills. And a usual side effect is improvement in your own skiing as you help others improve theirs.
If you are interested in volunteering for either the beginner clinics or the coached ski outings, please email our Ski Clinic Administrator Laura Seaver.
Thanks! And the new skiers thank you, too

Edison Burn Marking Between August 30 and September 28, 18 CONC volunteers put in 8 days and 128 hours marking the area of the Edison SnoPark that was burned last year. The map below shows the section that was re-marked, including Light Bulb Loop, Lightbulb Tie, HV Tie, lower High Voltage, Short Circuit, and the part of Supercharger north of junction 113. The section of Supercharger, Old Growth, and Dynamo not marked are indicated by the “X” marks. Since the area was pretty much completely burned, we were working in char and dust; it was a dirty job! Warren contacted Brook Snavely from Central Oregon Live and invited him. To join us. He spent the entire morning with us, rushed back to the studio, and produced this video.

Gear Fix Donations Now that hiking season is wrapping up, and you are reviewing and replacing both summer and winter gear, remember that CONC is making good use of your usable cast offs. We collected over $600 from winter sales as a result of your donations to our account at Gear Fix. We reserve these funds in our trails improvement and maintenance program. Many thanks to all who have donated over the years.
