Successful Spring Fling

An ideal day greeting us for the Spring Fling on May 6th at a new location, Aspen Hall in Shevlin Park. Charlie Cornish coordinated a pre-gathering perambulation in Shevlin Park, and potluck contributions by attendees supplemented the sandwiches supplied by the Social Committee. We held a brief business meeting, but most importantly, we recognized Linda Frost and Eileen Woodward for their many years of service to the club. In recognition of their many contributions to the success of CONC following their recent “retirements” from the Board, I presented each of them with a gift certificate to Wintercreek Nursery. We were even entertained by an outdoor-themed comedy routine by club member Jason Frohnmayer! Congratulations to Eileen Pustis and the rest of the Social Committee for putting on an outstanding event!

Edison Shelter

As Vice President Sue Sullivan reports below, replacement of the Edison Shelter is on the horizon! We are fortunate that the Deschutes National Forest secured funds to replace the popular shelter. Stay tuned for more information as the plans develop.

Tick Talk

While the lack of snow over the winter opened hiking trails very early this year, the tick population likewise appears to have gained a jumpstart on hitching rides on unsuspecting recreationists and trail volunteers. While a tick check is always advised after a hike, preventative measures can be taken ahead of potential exposure. Club member Stephen Whittaker brought this New York Times article to our attention, which recommends permethrin fabric treatment for clothing, gear, and tents. Stay safe out there!

Stay in Touch!

News and Announcements

Progress on Edison Shelter Replacement

We’re received great news:  planning for the replacement of the Edison Shelter is moving forward! There is money available from the Forest Service as part of their fire restoration funds. This money, combined with funds set aside by the Nordic Club, should cover most of what’s needed to replace the Edison Shelter. These Forest Service funds will also cover the cost of new road signs, trail markers, and junction signs for ski, snowshoe and snowmobile trails.

A site for the new shelter has been identified that’s a short distance away from the one that burned. This summer we plan to focus on shelter design, site and road preparation requirements, and a formal cost estimate. Construction is scheduled for the summer of 2027, to allow sufficient time for Forest Service admin and engineering requirements to be met.

Stay tuned for more details once we get further along in this process!

Gear Fix Donations

If you are looking to downsize your gear collection, please remember that CONC is making good use of your usable cast offs.  We collected over $600 from winter sales last year as a result of your donations to our account at Gear Fix.  We reserve these funds in our trails improvement and maintenance program.

Many thanks to all who have donated over the years.
