Mapping changes are coming!

For years, the Forest Service has made available maps of our local sno-parks on their website, and the best way to use these maps has been with the Avenza app. We’ve had links to those same maps on our web site. However, Avenza has dramatically changed its focus, so we can no longer update those maps, and we expect the Avenza app to be unavailable to recreation users some time in the future.

We have already started looking for our future navigation tools. We’re looking into other means of sharing maps on our website, and also looking at possibilities for getting better winter trails information on apps that people may already be using, such as Gaia or Trailforks.

We are looking to assemble a small group of people to work on this. If you are interested in being a part of this effort, please let Warren Preston (wppreston@yahoo.com) know. If you have experience with GIS or a variety of electronic navigation apps, that’s a plus!

We will make electronic navigation recommendations as soon as we have them and we expect to offer training in any new tools we recommend.

As always, remember to check your email and the Events Calendar for all our upcoming activities both indoors and outside. I always welcome any questions, comments, or suggestions you have about the club. You can contact me directly at: wppreston@yahoo.com

Progress on Edison Shelter Replacement

Can you picture the new Edison Shelter in this space?

We’re working on the design and planning for the construction of the new Edison Shelter. The site has been selected; it’s near the “C” junction in the snowshoe trail system, which is also close to the ski trail. It’s right near the edge of the Little Lava burn; there are  big ponderosas that are still very much alive near the site.

The concept for the shelter is one that is more fire resistant,  but has some of the rustic character of other shelters. There are still details of the design that we’re working out but this sketch will give you an idea of what we’re thinking.

We’re expecting to start work on site preparation in late summer or early fall, and we’ll be working on fabricating shelter components over the winter. On-site construction will happen next spring/summer.

Most of the fabrication and construction will be done with volunteer labor. We’ll be looking for volunteers to help, probably in the fall. Stay tuned for more details as we get along in this process!

Gear Fix Donations

If you are looking to downsize your gear collection, please remember that CONC is making good use of your usable cast offs.  We collected over $600 from winter sales last year as a result of your donations to our account at Gear Fix.  We reserve these funds in our trails improvement and maintenance program.

Many thanks to all who have donated over the years.
