Trail Maintenance Update
When it comes to trail maintenance, some things are best done when there’s a hefty snow pack.
Hanging markers and signs in the summer involves packing in an extension ladder along with the tools, and the work can be hot and buggy. In March, we usually hit the magic combination of 6 to 10 feet of snow pack, good consolidated snow, longer days, and warm enough weather that the trees aren’t frozen solid. We are able to reach higher up with pole saws so we can prevent having drooping branches cover up the assurance markers.
The past few weeks have been perfect for this kind of trail work. We’ve done limbing to prevent tree wells from forming, and raised markers on the Big Meadow, Flagline Tie, lower Flagline, Ridge, Shelter Tie, and Crosscut Trails. We are planning to hang new junction signs at the intersection of Flagline Tie and Flagline, since the winds in February took down that iconic tree that held the old signs, and cleared a few logs from the trail as well. We expect to have good conditions for similar work for at least a couple more weeks.
