Distance/hours: 8 miles roundtrip. Plan on spending 6-7 hours including drive time to/from trailhead.
Elevation gain/loss: 500 ft of gain.
Difficulty level: Difficult. Half the hike is easy but four miles will be on an old roadbed through the Newberry lava flow (the roadbed is generally just smaller chunks of loose lava but walkable). If you aren’t steady on your feet then this probably isn’t the hike for you. We will go through a kipuka (island of trees in a lava flow) that has a collapsed lava tube.
What to bring: Summer Ten Essentials, water, snack/lunch. Half the hike will be on lava so sturdy boots are needed. If you decide to wear your trail running shoes then please bring a second pair for the hike out. Trekking poles are recommended as some of the lava is unstable. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.
Number of hikers: 8 hikers total.
Meeting time/place: 8:15 AM in Walmart parking lot adjacent to the Pinebrook Blvd entrance. If you are coming on the Parkway from the north then take the Powers Road East exit).
Other Information: Hike will be canceled if temperature is forecast to be above 70 degrees. Hiking on lava in warm sunny weather is not fun.
