It’s time to start preparing the shelters for the winter! With the low snow we had at the start of last winter not much wood was burned, so our needs for firewood stocking are minimal this year. At Nordeen Shelter, we won’t need to bring in more firewood… but we do want to clear woody debris from around the shelter to improve fire resistance, do some minor limbing and brushing, and stack the cut brush and limbs.
There is a short hike of 1/2 mile each way up the snowshoe trail from the Meissner parking lot to get to the shelter. It seems better than driving on the heavily rutted road that goes to the shelter, and the path is good. We should be done with the work by about 1:00. We’ll have lunch at the shelter before heading back.
What to bring: gloves, long sleeved shirt, eye protection, water, snack/lunch, and wear hiking boots (no tennis shoes or sandals). Hard hats are required and can be provided if you don’t have one. Tools will be provided.
Carpooling: We’ll meet at the Cascade Lakes Welcome Center for carpooling.
