Sunday Show & Go Hike: Alder Springs/Old Bridge

  • 6 Oct 2024
  • 8:30 AM
  • Village Green Park in Sisters

The meet up location on this Sunday hike is different. We will be meeting in Sisters instead of Bend!!!

Description: This hike is to a pristine desert canyon taking you down through 1000s of years of geological formations to Whychus Creek and Alder Springs. We will ford Whychus Creek and continue on to the confluence of the Whychus and Deschutes rivers. On the return we will hike down the Old Bridge Trail to view ancient pictographs.

Distance: 8 miles round trip. Plan on spending 6-7 hours including drive time to/from the trailhead.

Elevation gain/loss: 900 feet of gain/loss overall

What to bring: Ten essentials, water, snack/lunch, and proper footwear (no tennis shoes or sandals). Please bring water shoes and hiking poles as we will be fording Whychuss Creek. The water is knee deep (depending on your height) and moves moderately. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

Difficulty level: Moderately difficult, due to stream crossing.

Number of hikers: Sign up is not required for this hike.

Carpooling: The road to Alder Springs is deeply rutted in places. High clearance vehicles are required. We will probably need about 2-3 drivers with space in their vehicles for passengers. Carpooling can be arranged at the meeting place. If you ride with someone, please donate to their gas fund. Be generous for obvious reasons.

Meeting place: Village Green Park in Sisters by the restrooms. Come by 8:30 am, we will depart around 8:45.
