This is a bit of an adventure hike to Brennan Palisades located off of Mill Road east of Prineville. The hike will be off-trail, but will follow an old mining road for most of the way to the top of the palisades. The route will take us to some very cool (and geologically-interesting) palisades at the south edge of Wildcat Caldera. We will stop for an optional lunch in Prineville after the hike.
Distance: 3-4 miles RT. Plan to spend 5-6 hours on this trip including drive time.
Elevation gain/loss: 500 feet of gain
What to bring: Ten essentials, water, snack/lunch, and proper footwear (no tennis shoes or sandals). Hiking poles are suggested. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.
Difficulty level: Moderate but does not involve any extreme climbing.
Number of hikers: No limit. Sign up is not required for this hike, but please let John know if you will be joining the hike and where you will be meeting the group.
Carpooling: Carpooling can be arranged at the meeting place. If you ride with someone, please donate to their gas fund. Be generous for obvious reasons.
Meeting place: We will leave from the Neff Road parking lot at Big Sky Park. The parking lot is located on the north side of Neff Road approximately one-quarter mile east of Hamby Road.
Hikers from Redmond or Prineville can meet us at the sign marking the turn off to Brennan Palisades from Mill Road at 11 AM. The sign for Brennan Palisades is at the end of the paved section of Mill Road at milepost 5. Mill Road intersects Highway 26 approximately 10 miles east of Prineville near Ochoco Reservoir.
