Fall has arrived and time to get started on getting the snowshoe trails ready for another winter season. The Little Lava Fire burned into the Nordic and snowshoe trails at Edison In the fall of 2024. The following image shows the extent of the heavy burn (red overlay) on the Edison Trail Map. Southern portions of the Edison Short Loop and Tesla trail were along the edge of the burn and will be re-established for the upcoming season. The Edison Long Loop extended into the heavy burn and will not be re-established until we see how snow accumulation, snow retention and tree preservation occur in this lower-elevation and south- facing area.
All of the markers were lost in the burned areas and we have flagged the burned trails for marker installation. The Short loop will be re-established along its previous track as enough large trees remain for marker installation. About 1/2-mile of the southern portion of Tesla needed to be shifted out of the heavy burn and we need to do some trimming and sapling removal for reassurance marker installation and visibility.
This week we will hike the Edison Short Loop to junction "C" and then get the 1/2-mile section of the Tesla trail between junction "C and the High Voltage Nordic trail ready for reassurance marker installation. This will involve katana & pole saw work. This section of the trail is still burned, though more like a prescribed burn. You will get dirty.
If time and energy permits, we will continue on Tesla for about 1 mile to where it crosses the Supercharger Nordic trail. This patch of suggested burn has not been assessed for damage and we need to know if markers need to be replaced. We will then hike back on snowmobile road rather than continuing around Tesla.
