This is more of a tour rather than a typical hike. We'll start at the Edison Sno-Park parking area and follow ski trails through the area that was burned last year during the Little Lava Fire. We'll see the damage from the fires and find the remains of the Edison Shelter, which burned to the ground. We'll see where CONC volunteers have installed assurance markers to reestablish the ski and snowshoe trails in the burned area. We'll also see where plants have already begun to sprout in areas that were burned to the ground.
As these are not hiking trails and are located in a burned out lava flow area, expect unsure footing, stepovers, and rocky terrain. If you use hiking poles, this is the time to bring them. Sturdy footwear recommended.
Distance/hours: About 5 miles roundtrip. Plan on spending 5-6 hours, including drive time to the trailhead.
Elevation gain/loss: 200-300 ft. of elevation gain, but ups and downs over lava flows.
Difficulty level: Moderate due to terrain.
What to bring: Summer Ten Essentials, water, snack/lunch and proper footwear (no tennis shoes or sandals). Dogs are not allowed on this hike.
Number of hikers: 12 participants including the hike leader
Carpooling: Carpooling can be arranged at the meeting place. If you ride with someone, please donate to their gas fun. Be generous for obvious reasons.
Meeting place: The Grove in NW Crossing: 921 NW Mount Washington Drive, Bend. We'll grab a table in the general seating area, near Thump. Come early to grab a coffee and chat with others before we arrange carpools. Be prepared to leave by 9:00 am sharp! Please contact the organizer if you plan to meet at the trailhead.
Leader: Warren Preston, 571-289-8073
