Snowshoe Trail Maintenance

Tuesday September 8th

8:00 to 3:00

Fall has arrived, at least temporarily, and time to get started on getting the snowshoe trails ready for another winter season.  Our first task this season will be to complete the restoration of the Edison trail system, by reestablishing the Long Loop Trail.

Last season we restored all of the snowshoe trails at Edison except the Long Loop Trail after the previous years fire. The  Edison Long Loop extended into the heavy burn area and was not re-established until we saw how snow accumulation, snow retention and tree preservation occur in this lower-elevation and south- facing area. The good news is this area, while open, does hold snow equal to the other trails and is ready to be put back into service! That will complete the restoration of the trails at Edison!

Almost all of the markers were lost in the burned area, which encompasses the entire Long Loop trail and we have flagged the burned trail for marker installation. The Long Loop will be re-established along its previous track as enough large trees remain for marker installation.

This week we will hike the Edison Short Loop to junction "B" with ladders and markers where we will start on the Long Loop reassurance marker re-installation. This will involve minor katana & pole saw work.  We will work in as many groups as we have participants to staff, to install new markers using ladders. This section of the trail is still burned, though not nearly as dusty as it was last season, as it has gone through a year of rain/snow. You will get dirty though as the trees are all charred.

We will mark as much of the Long Loop trail as we have time for to trail junction “C”. We will then hike back on the LB tie ski trail rather than continuing on the Short Loop trail as it will be an easier walk back with the ladders.
